Success is built sequentially. It’s one thing at a time.
~Gary Keller
We run marathons by keeping our sneakers in the same place every day. We write books by keeping a space clear on our desks. We make it into a professional orchestra by keeping our violin out in plain sight and never inside the closet.
It is the simple things that we do consistently that create the structure to make us and keep us successful. It is not generally a magic moment; it is a series of objectively boring stories that move us toward our dreams.
We like to think we just need to get motivated. We simply need to try harder to be the person we want to be. Success doesn’t generally work that way. Success is built through structure. We don’t need to focus on outcomes; we need to focus on the process. What would the day-to-day life of the best version of us look like? What routines and rituals would be in place to facilitate that success? If we can make our lives look like that, the outcomes will follow.
Let’s stop holding out for exciting breakthroughs. Let’s be willing to lean into the grunt work needed to build the lives we dream of. Let’s do all the mundane, boring things that will clear a path for the exciting results. Let’s exercise discipline, grace, reflection, and resilience to build success, one small, sustainable step at a time.
