But if your desire is directed properly, toward doing the best job you are capable of doing, then you cannot possibly fail. In fact, if you do the best job you can at every moment, you’ve already succeeded.
~Massimo Pigliucci
Results are never entirely in our control. Too many circumstances can enter into the mix. We have no power over the majority of the things we experience, but our own results can either suffer or benefit from those circumstances. If we constantly focus on our results, we will celebrate victories we didn’t earn, and we will mourn losses that were not our fault.
We can always control our effort and our attitude. That is how we must measure success, as it is the only useful measurement. We cannot place our own worth in the hands of fate.
If we simply keep showing up, being fully present, expecting the best from ourselves, and then executing those expectations, how can we go wrong? Even if our results are not what we would define as successful, the process puts us in a position to impact results as much as is in our power. It does not serve us to worry about things we can’t control, and it does not serve us to give less than we can to the things we can control.
The truth of it is, the universe controls the ceiling of what we can accomplish. We control the floor. Our effort and our attitude can raise our floor to be very close to our ceiling. We can rest easy each night, knowing the best of us showed up each day.
