It is like the point where the rainbow touches the forest. We think that we can see it – but if we go look for it, it isn’t there.
~Carlo Rovelli
We want to find a clear nexus between our choices and our results. We can’t always find one. When we revisit our choices individually and then examine what went on in our lives after that singular choice, we fail to account for far too many variables. Just because we are willing to lean into a storm we don’t guarantee ourselves to see a rainbow.
The choices we make repeatedly are bound to have an impact, beyond all the other variables. It is through consistent practice that we take control of our lives. It is through repetition that we can start to see the connection between our actions and their outcomes. It is all the days we don’t feel like it, when the motivation isn’t there, but we do the thing anyway, that we shape our lives. If we are looking for immediate results, we may cut corners or get frustrated. If we consistently follow our intentions, the results will eventually take care of themselves.
It’s not easy to delay gratification, but it is the key to lasting happiness. If we can learn to choose intention over impulse, again and again, more of our dreams will be realized.
We can chase all the rainbows we want, but we must accept the fact that it will cause us to stand in the rain a lot. We are resilient. We are disciplined. We can become a better version of ourselves.
