It seems that the one characteristic most closely correlated with success in life, which has persisted over the decades, is the ability to delay gratification.
~Michio Kaku
Right and right now do not always align. In fact, they generally don’t. Unless we have done a tremendous job in developing habits that drive us toward our intentions in nearly every circumstance, our impulses will often pull us away from them.
Our systems are naturally designed to protect us from the things we fear, and we often have to face those fears to get what we truly desire from our lives. If we answer every impulse, if we can’t delay our gratification, those fears will rule us.
We need to be able to widen that space between stimulus and response. We need to have time for logic to have its tug-of-war with instinct. That is not to say that we should find a way to shut down our gut – our immediate reaction is useful information too, but logic takes some time.
Most of the times we’ve done something we later felt the need to apologize for were triggered by impulsivity. If we’d simply been willing to delay our action long enough to consider what the best version of us would do in that moment, we may well have chosen differently.
We do not need to deny ourselves gratification, we simply need to delay it to make sure we are making choices that will leave us truly gratified.
