Do not leave your reputation up to chance or gossip; it is your life‘s artwork, and you must craft it, hone it, and display it with the care of an artist.
~Robert Greene
We can’t live our entire lives within the court of public opinion and expect to emerge authentic. We have to live according to our own plans and our own dreams. We have to make the choices we believe the best version of us would make, regardless if we think that choice may be unpopular.
Our reputation is not entirely generated from our own choices. Some of our reputation is built on perception and some on projection. We only control our own actions and reactions and we can’t afford to spend much time worrying about what others will think about choices that truly serve us.
If we are living our best lives and others have a problem with that, so be it. If we live our lives to please a certain group of people, we will surely displease some other group. If we are disciplined, kind, and steady, our reputation will take care of itself. On the other hand, how long can we keep up some inauthentic charade that aims to impress people? The truth will eventually show up. The people who were impressed with the mask we were wearing will no longer be so pleased.
Discipline, grace, reflection, and resilience will move us closer to our dreams. Let your reputation be important, but only as a driver toward your own, authentic dreams. The person you are and the person you want to be are worthy of love.
