October 11, 2026- Careful what we wish for

It’s my world, and I don’t care for any other. What it hasn’t got is not worth having, and what it doesn’t know is not worth knowing.

~Kenneth Grahame

How many others would make a wish to live the life where we’re living? How many basic needs must be met if we are sitting here pondering these words right now? We may fall into a “whoa is me” attitude, from time to time. We all endure suffering, and it is human nature to wish it away, but if we really want our lives to vanish and be replaced by something new, what guarantees do we have that we wouldn’t immediately wish for our old ones back?

Much of what we have and what we know came out of hardship. We didn’t necessarily want to suffer the way we did, but it formed us into the person we are. Do we want to wish any of that away? What would we need to give up if we gave away that suffering? Would we be what we have become? Would we have the relationships we’ve built? Would we have all the wisdom we’ve accrued?

Let’s be careful what we wish for. Let’s wish for more discipline, more grace, more reflection, more resilience. Let’s build a better version of ourselves, one choice at a time. King Midas would have been far better off earning his own gold, even though some of the days he would’ve spent toiling away, probably would have sucked. We can endure a little suck, probably a lot of it, at times. Let’s lean into it. Let’s not wish for any world, but our own.
