October 5, 2026- Stronger than our excuses

A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die without putting a word to paper.

~EB White

There is and never will be a shortage of excuses for putting off our dreams. Anytime we’re looking for one, we can find it. Leaving our actions up to circumstances beyond our control is like walking around with a pair of dice in our pocket, rolling them every time we need to make a choice, but only picking the option that serves us after rolling a 12. Why would we do that?

When we wait for the perfect conditions to get to work, we pay a great deal of attention to the imperfections. Instead of looking for opportunities, we look for excuses.

If there were no obstacles, our work would already be finished. If we didn’t need to struggle, our dreams would already be a reality. What do we want to use to define ourselves, the obstacles or the work? Even when we trip over a hurdle, we end up falling down on the other side of it. Then, we can pick ourselves up and prepare to go over or through the next one, or we can limp off the track and whine about how the hurdles are too dangerous, letting the finish line forever be an unmet goal.

Our discipline, grace, reflection, and resilience are stronger than our excuses. Let’s get to work on our dreams, even though the conditions aren’t and never will be perfect. We are our choices.
