October 3, 2026- Peace in our presence

If the person you are talking to doesn't appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.

~AA Milne

What we have to say is always very important. To us.

When we feel like we are not heard, how often do we label the people we’re speaking to as selfish or uncaring? Do we really know why they’re not listening? Do we know what kind of internal dialogue is pulling their attention away from us? Do we know what kind of internal battle may go on inside them to pay attention to do anything?

Sure, a lack of careful attention can be a choice. Some people are so self-absorbed that they don’t care about our feelings and they never will. Others may be self-absorbed for a very good reason. In fact, if we could learn what thoughts are going on in their heads, we may tell them to prioritize their own issues instead of listening to ours.

What is that “small piece of fluff“ that may be stuck in your ear? Does it deserve your attention? Would it serve you to take it out and throw it away? Would it serve you to give it your full time and energy so you can resolve the issue?

We want the full attention of others, so let’s give what we want to get. Half-listening to others while wading through our own issues in a half-hearted way will not solve anything. Let’s find peace in our presence.
