“The more sand that has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.”
~Jean-Paul Sartre
We are a rough draft that we are continuously editing. Each day, we should make our story just a little bit clearer, a little bit closer to the one we would like to tell. We do not have to start over each day with a clean sheet of paper; in fact, we don’t get to, even if we’d like that. Most of our story has already been written. As we live on, we get to add to the next chapter, and we get to alter our perspective on the life that has already passed us by.
We can reflect on the past without reliving it. We can use the wisdom we’ve gained through our own lived experience to better understand the context of past events. We can use that information to inform future choices – repeating behaviors that have served us and altering those that haven’t.
Past choices are part of our story. We can’t go back and change the facts. But nothing is forcing us to live the same life events over and over. We can turn the page and never read it again. We can use our experience to learn, to grow, to evolve.
Let the image you hold up as the best version of you become clearer each day. Let the story you write today align more closely with that image.
