Most people who perpetuate evil do not see what they are doing as evil. Evil exists primarily in the eye of the beholder, especially in the eye of the victim.
~Roy Baumeister
Do you ever stop and wonder where your blind spots are? We watch others make mistakes. Quite often, they are the same type of mistakes over and over. We wonder, “how can they not see it?“ How are they completely ignorant about this flaw that is so obvious to everyone around them?
Unless we take some time to look in the mirror, everyone else has a much clearer view of us than we have of ourselves. Of course, like everything else we observe, the image we think we see in that mirror is not the truth, but a construct of what our brain pieces together. Anytime we observe something while bringing emotional baggage with us to that observation, our perception will be thrown off. There is no observation to which we bring more emotional baggage than to our own self reflection.
We must find our tribe. We must find our people who are willing to help us through our blind spots without crushing us over them. We must be willing to lean into the vulnerability of sharing some of our self reflections with others, so that they can offer other perspectives on that same image. If we truly want to grow, it’s helpful to know what we really are.
