The future is no more uncertain than the present.
~Walt Whitman
We don’t truly believe that we understand everything that’s going on around us, do we? How much are we failing to observe? How much of what we are observing are we misinterpreting?
What we take to be certain is far from being certain. Our perspective, our bias, our emotions, and our worldview all impact the things we observe in the present moment. While we can’t afford to live our lives in doubt of everything we think we are experiencing, we can often pause for just a breath. We can momentarily ask ourselves if the story we’re telling ourselves about a moment is actually congruent with that moment.
Why are we in such a rush to judgment? Why do we think it’s so important to quickly react? The world is not going to fly off of its axis nor escape from its orbit if we take a moment just to take a moment.
The present is uncertain. It’s OK. It always has been. We will just keep doing the best we can with the information at hand, as we presently understand it. When we mess up (and we will) we can offer ourselves grace and try to do better next time. All the while, we will keep doing our best to simply make the same choices the best version of us would make.
