For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.
~Aristotle
We can bear with being inept, can’t we? We can make a fool of ourselves. We can struggle. We can be the worst player in the game, the slowest runner in the race, the least informed in the room. We can give ourselves grace for the process of learning where our weaknesses are and addressing them.
If we only do the things we’re already good at, we deny the fact that we have grown. We ignore our past struggles. We may forget that the person we are today is not just a product of those skills; we are a product of the struggle we endured to acquire them.
Once we’ve learned what it feels like to be good at something, we want to have that feeling all the time. We may forget about the journey that preceded our competence. We may also forget that resilience is a skill that can be improved through practice. Each time we struggle and work through it, we become better equipped to overcome future struggle.
Find something you’d love to do but can’t yet. Do it. Be terrible at it until you’re just bad at it. Be bad at it until you're mediocre. You may not become an expert, but you will become a better person through the process.
