Be a philosopher; but, amidst all your philosophy, be still a man.
~David Hume
We can have loads of great ideas, pure values, and sound intentions, but if we can’t put those things into action, what are we? Our philosophy means nothing if what we think does not show up in what we say and do.
This is why our dreams can be audacious, but our plans must be pragmatic and achievable. There has to be a place where the rubber meets the road, where thought becomes action, where we prove we are more than unmet goals and unrealized potential.
It is OK for our dreams to come true incrementally. We are not yet ready to be all we would ever like to be. We are a work in progress. As long as both of those things are happening – the work and the progress – our results will be there in the end. But if all we do is sit and think, think of good ideas, think of a good time to get to work on those ideas, they become a lightbulb without any electricity.
What are we going to do about it? When are we going to feel like struggling? Probably never. Greatness can only be attained if we are willing to do the work when we don’t feel like it. We can be driven by our discipline and our resilience. We can be steadied by our habits. We can step into an incrementally better version of ourselves, one choice at a time.
