Never regret your past. Rather, embrace it as the teacher that it is.
~Robin Sharma
To regret the past is to regret ourselves. It is the past that formed us into what we are today. The choices we made that didn’t serve us, that didn’t align with our dreams or our intentions, were just as formative as those that were. We don’t have to love all of our choices, but we need to love all of ourselves.
What can we do about it? We can’t go back and fix anything, so will it benefit us to ruminate about the past? We shouldn’t deny that we have made mistakes or that our flaws have been exposed, or we are bound to repeat those same mistakes. We may find large portions of our lives replaying themselves on a loop. Regret isn’t going to fix any of that. Regret will let our worst choices stay in front of our minds, just begging to be repeated.
We have to present our minds with a better option. We have to think about what our present selves, a better version of the old one, would do under similar circumstances. Then, when the situation arises, we have an alternative ready to go. The poor decisions of the past don’t need to be repeated because we already decided that path wasn’t for us. We didn’t spend our days reliving it, trampling up and down that path to let it remain clear. We left it behind and let it grow over. Now we have planned a new path to forge.
