June 14, 2026- Leave the past in the past

What do sad people have in common? It seems they have all built a shrine to the past and often go there and do a strange wail and worship.

~Hafez

There is interest and observation in the present. There is hope in the future. When we feel sadness, we are inevitably stuck in the past. When we feel anxiety, we are stuck in the future. All of our choices happen in the present, but we tend not to spend much of our time there.

There’s nothing wrong with us feeling sad. We are allowed to need some time to process our past to work our way through the trauma we’ve been through. When that sadness moves from being a temporary reflection to being a dark cloud that never blows over, it will start to impact our present decisions in negative ways. We will be using residual emotions from past events as part of the raw data that helps us make today’s decisions.

We can step away from that cloud. We can leave the past in the past. We do not need to deny that the past happened the way it did, nor do we need to remove our own responsibility for our choices. We do, however, need to remember that today is a new day, a chance to prove what we learned yesterday, an opportunity to step into a better, wiser version of ourselves.

Let’s learn to worship the possibility of the present moment, a space where all our power lies, where we can start to make our dreams come true.
