Anyone who has begun to think, places some portion of the world in jeopardy.
~John Dewey
We cannot accept something new without letting go of something old. We do not have giant chasms of open space in our brains, our souls, nor our calendars, that need to be filled. When we make a choice, it is generally an “or” not an “and.”
What is it about our current lives that we are so loyal to? Why do we refuse to let go of patterns that don’t serve us? Why can’t we set down what is no longer useful in favor of something that is?
Change is hard. We are predisposed to repeating the things we’ve already learned to do. There’s comfort in habit, because our brains don’t need to expend the energy to make a different choice. This does not leave us stuck where we are. We can disrupt a pattern. We can make a new choice. We can demolish what has been created in favor of a new and improved structure.
It is not the newness that intimidates us most; it is letting go of what already is. When we truly reflect and think things through, everything that already is becomes subject to change. Upon reflection, we may realize that behaviors that we’ve practiced seemingly forever need to be destroyed, as they do not serve us. That can be scary. Does it create a commentary that we are not good enough and that we never have been?
We are worthy of love, just as we are. We do not need to change to be worthy. At the same time, we are capable of growth and evolution, and we owe it to ourselves and to the universe to examine that, even if we have to destroy some old things in the process.
