To reach a port, we must set sail –
Sail, not tie at anchor.
Sail, not drift.
~Franklin D Roosevelt
We won’t turn into the best version of ourselves by repeatedly doing the same things the same way as we always have. We have a whole inventory of habits, and not all of them serve us. We have habitual behaviors that serve us that can become better-practiced and more efficient. Then there are spots in our lives where habits would serve us, but there are none, as we may not have determined what those habits should be.
What do we need to replace? What behaviors are we doing repeatedly that are leaving us anchored to who and what we are? What is holding us back from growth and evolution? We don’t have to change those things all at once, but we can make a series of small, sustainable changes to replace our undesirable habits with better ones.
What do we need to improve? What are we doing repeatedly, but without the integrity and intention required to get the most from those behaviors? Can we exercise or discipline to not just do those things, but to be great at them? We do not have to reach for perfection right now, but can we get incrementally better over time?
Where are the gaps? Where are we just drifting through life without a true vision or direction? Where can we set intentions that don’t already exist, then build habits to support those intentions? Let’s set sail toward a better version of ourselves today.
