Transferring your passion to your job is far easier than finding a job that happens to match your passion.
~Seth Godin
Your strengths are part of what you are. They are not contingent upon outside circumstances to make them show up in you. They are, however, only apparent when you tap into them and expose them to the world around you.
Too many of us walk through life feeling like an untapped resource. While we often feel like our time and energy gets used up, we don’t feel that way about our strengths. If the people around us could just recognize what we are good at and call on us to do those things, we would feel validated and they would benefit from our talents.
Why is it someone else’s job to recognize and call on our strengths? What if we choose to bring our strengths to our work, rather than waiting for the work to ask for it?
There are certainly skills that are specific to a particular endeavor, lacking a great deal of application anywhere else. There are also skills that transcend any specific time in place. We all have some of them and we will find meaning and purpose in any of the work we do by bringing our strengths to it.
Discipline, grace, reflection, or resilience can show up anywhere. Empathy, communication, cooperation, problem-solving, or a love of learning is useful in any kind of work. Courage, curiosity, justice, or humor can benefit any endeavor. Be proud of your strengths and bring them out, whether anyone is asking for them, or not.
