Let us not pretend to doubt in philosophy, what we do not doubt in our hearts.
Charles Sanders Peirce
We can tell everyone around us a great story. We can even tell ourselves a great story. We can make grandiose proclamations of a personal development plan that will make us a shining example of discipline and resilience. If we do not truly believe in our hearts that we can apply our stated philosophy to our very real lives in the midst of this very real world, we are destined for failure.
We can’t expect our circumstances to change all that much. The universe is a giant machine, with so many factors outside our control. Despite all that, regardless of hardship, of struggle, of the challenges that have been, that are, and that always will be, we know what we want to be. Right now, in this present moment, what is one small, sustainable change we can make to be more of that person? We cannot expect to become at all at once, but we can expect ourselves to make a meaningful change. We can make progress. We can collect small wins that pile up on one another.
The belief has to come first. We have won before and we can do it again. We have overcome struggles before and we can do it again. We can do things now that were once impossible for us. We must start every change with the belief that we can turn our philosophy into action.
Doubt all else and ask difficult questions to seek genuine truths, but never doubt yourself.
