It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.
~Seneca
What do we really need? Not much. It doesn’t require a robust 401(k) to achieve mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. For sure, wealth may make our journey easier in some ways. Particularly when we come into hard times, it is often easier for those with wealth to buy their way out of it. And certainly, some hardships are going to come to those without security in food and housing. But once our basic needs are met, we don’t need much.
Our desire to collect nicer and nicer things, more and more creature comforts, becomes a vicious cycle. As we attain more, we desire more. We become insatiable. If we could break that cycle at any point, if we could choose to consider it enough, it would be enough.
There have been plenty of happy, satisfied, poor people throughout history. There have been loads of unhappy, discontent, wealthy people. Our attitudes are something we can control much easier than our bank account. We can focus on gratitude. We can pay more attention to our haves than to our wants. We can value time and relationships over things.
The best version of you doesn’t need much, other than love. Create abundance through self love.
