I love and accept myself, even though I am not perfect.
~Nick Trenton
True love does not exist in spite of one’s imperfection; true love includes those imperfections. True love doesn’t need to ignore anything. True love notices the mistakes, the weaknesses, the flaws, and the shortcomings, and loves them all.
This seems like a model in which we could be taken advantage of, even abused. If anything goes, yet we will go on loving, anyway, can the object of our love get away with anything without fear of losing us? They can, and some will, and yet we can find it in our hearts to love, anyway. It is this vulnerability that makes us capable of experiencing the truest love. It is this level of love that we must show ourselves.
Unconditional love is empowering. When we can live our lives, knowing that our flaws and our mistakes will not push that love away, we are free to take the risks necessary for growth and evolution. We are free to make meaningful changes, knowing that these changes are not going to cost us that love.
Love yourself, completely and unconditionally. Assure yourself that love is not going anywhere. Use the security of that love to support your growth. Use the model of that love to teach you how to love and how to be loved.
