The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.
~Friedrich Nietzsche
For a society with access to so many voices, so much media, and so many news outlets, we sure do like to narrow our feed. Sometimes, we can blame an algorithm for the echo chamber we find ourselves in, but most of the time, it is our choices that put us there.
What are we looking for? Do we need constant validation? Are we terrified of finding out we were wrong about some things? Are we so keenly aware of the amount of work it takes to change our minds and our hearts that we would prefer to opt out?
It is entirely possible that the person who practices another religion has some values that would make our lives better. It is likely that the person on the other side of the political aisle has an idea that would benefit more people than yours. We can only learn when we are willing to expose ourselves to things we don’t already know.
If your ideas are truly the best ideas, they can hold up to doubt and scrutiny. If your ideas are not the best, does it serve you to hold onto them, just because they were yours? Value new voices. Try new ideas. Evolve.
