There is no such thing as a lousy job – only lousy men who don’t care to do it.
~Ayn Rand
Our work is expansive. It does not just include the things we may do as a term of our employment to pay our bills. Our work includes all the tasks, from the most fulfilling to the most mundane, that we must do to be functioning human beings. How we do that work says a lot about our character. Practice makes permanent, so how we do anything can quickly become how we do everything.
Not all of our work is going to immediately fulfill us. Most of the tasks we complete are not worth a news story, or a plaque, or even a story to someone who asked us about our day. But the way we complete those tasks builds us into what we are. Our work can form us into the version of ourselves that is there and primed to show up when the best of us is called upon.
If we are going to make the bed, why not make sure it is smooth and even? If we are going to sweep the floor, why not make sure it is spotless? If we are going to interact with a customer or client at our job, why not make that person feel like a VIP?
Use your work to build your character. Create the best version of you, one task at a time. Practice a better you.
