Immortals can be fools, especially when mortal emotions rule over cool reason.
~Philip Zimbardo
Our feelings are useful – all of them. If the emotions we would generally categorize as negative – fear, sadness, anger, contempt, disgust , etc. – were not useful, we would see some evolutionary movement suggesting that humans will eventually stop feeling them. We won’t, because they are useful feedback. Our emotions let us know how our bodies and our minds react to a particular set of circumstances.
While our emotions provide us with useful feedback and should have some role in our decision-making process, we must remember that our feelings are only temporary. Additionally, our feelings are often tied to circumstances outside our control. If we let our choices be continuously guided by our feelings, we will be prone to act on impulse, more than on intention. We will come to serve the moment, rather than serving ourselves. We will often be driven by our fears instead of our dreams.
No matter what we are feeling in a moment, we can still be intentional with our choices. Is the thing we are about to do bringing us closer to the person we wish to be, or is it an impulsive reaction to our temporary feelings? Feel, completely, the entire spectrum of human emotions, then use reason to make your next choice.
