Roads were made for journeys not destinations.
~Confucius
It is and always will be about the journey. It can’t be about the results, as the results don’t come to be without the process. We don’t pass a bar exam because of the work we do on the exam. We don’t get into the best shape of our lives because we stand shirtless in front of a mirror. We don’t have a successful marriage because we planned a big 25th anniversary dinner. It is the process that gets us to the event.
None of this happens in isolation. As we are working toward one goal, we practice our ability to achieve all our goals. We develop more discipline by exercising it in aligning our actions with our intentions. We develop more grace by exercising it to love ourselves through mistakes and failure. We develop more reflection by exercising it to determine whether our process is bringing us closer to our dreams. We develop more resilience by continuing the process through hardship.
Discipline, grace, reflection, and resilience are transcendent skills that we can cultivate, then use for every pursuit. As we improve those skills, each road becomes just a bit smoother. We can draw on them, no matter what goals we dare to dream up. These skills won’t change our destination, but they surely will change the journey.
