You cannot overestimate the unimportance of practically everything.
~Greg McKeown
The Latin word prioritas means being first. It doesn’t mean we should get to it after morning coffee, or after scrolling social media, or if there is time after the 647 things on our to-do list. Our priority is the thing that should be put first. When that is complete, we can make something else first, and we can get that thing done before all else.
How effective and efficient could our lives become, if we simply prioritized? If we stopped giving precedence to things we would never call important, we would suddenly have more time and energy for the important things.
Imagine if you carefully dictated your minute-by-minute activities for a couple of days. How many of those minutes would be spent on something you truly care about? There would be a very strong correlation between that answer and your level of happiness and fulfillment.
Of course, there are some mundane tasks we must get done in our lives that we are unlikely to find particularly exciting or inspiring. There are also plenty of tasks in most of our days that are giant time-sucks, robbing us of freedom to do the things we label as a priority.
Let’s start by letting the big things be the big things.
