He is free to evade reality, he is free to unfocus his mind and stumble blindly down any road he pleases, but not free to avoid the abyss he refuses to see.
~Ayn Rand
We are unable to see clearly that which is directly in front of our faces. There are just too many holes in our observation. We have a constant bombardment of preconceptions, biases, and distractions. Even the image we see in the mirror is a construct of our mind, rather than an actual visual representation of us.
Some of what we fail to observe is due to our inability to take everything in. Other aspects of what we fail to observe come from our unwillingness to accept things as they are.
Even in its most ideal form, life is tricky. The moment we feel we’ve come to truly understand another person, we observe something we haven’t noticed before, whether it was concealed from our view, or the person changed. Everything around us, including our own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being, is in a constant state of flux. This is why we must constantly reflect on our choices, deciding on whether or not they still serve us.
We can deny all we observe. We can pretend we already know it all, that we have nothing left to learn. But we cannot avoid the impact of our choices. Learn to choose better today.
