“The most important thing to remember is this: to be ready at any moment to give up what you are for what you might become.”
~W.E.B. Du Bois
If we would like to become the very best version of ourselves, we are going to have to lighten our grip on our practiced behaviors. We cannot keep doing exactly the same things and expect vastly different results. We must understand that to become different, we need to behave differently.
Change is stressful. There is comfort in the familiar, even when the familiar doesn’t particularly serve us. To embrace change, we must be willing to lean into discomfort. We must let go of what is comfortable and familiar. We must truly reflect on which of our habits align with our vision for the future, and which simply repeat the past.
Are we willing to let go? Are we ready to lean into discomfort? Are we ready to leave behind the life we’ve grown used to in the pursuit of something better?
Not everything about our current lives should be changed. We can hold onto the aspects of our lives that serve us, and change the rest, one small, sustainable step at a time. We can build the life we dream of, but we can’t do that without a willingness to give up the one we are living.
