“We’re not playing to win, we’re playing to play. And ultimately, playing is fun. Perfectionism gets in the way of fun."
~Rick Rubin
We can acknowledge a desire to be the best we can be, to hold ourselves to a high standard, to want to live up to our greatest potential, without putting ourselves in a vice of perfectionism.
We are human and we are flawed. We will never be perfect. If perfection is the standard we are looking to find satisfaction and happiness, we are setting ourselves up for eternal disappointment.
Life gives us an endless opportunity to play and almost all we do is work. It’s not about the tasks we have to get done as much as it’s the way we go about doing them. If we could stop making things such a miserable chore, if we could give ourselves more grace when things are not either perfect or immediate, if we could add more fun and more gratitude into every available space, how much more fulfilling would our lives become?
Watch our dogs and our toddlers. They haven’t learned to make their lives such a chore. When did we learn that and when can we unlearn it? Let’s let our lives be more playful. While we’re at it, let’s try not to remove all the play from our children’s lives. Let’s put more fun and games into our lives. We can still grow, learn, and evolve, and we may in fact do those things a lot more quickly if we make our lives more fun.
