The idea that the future is unpredictable is undermined every day by the ease with which the past is explained.
~Daniel Kahneman
When we look back at the past, we see just how much of it was determined by our choices. Sure, many of the circumstances that led to our choices were outside our control, but we decided how to react to those circumstances. Our reactions inevitably did much more to define the moment than did the circumstances.
We are uncertain when we look into the future. We worry about what circumstances the universe will bring our way. Keep in mind, we are not even certain of the present, as the limitations of our observations, clouded by our perception, our lived experience, our biases, and our moods, bring us an incomplete picture of reality. If we can’t even accurately observe the present, how could we possibly be accurate in our predictions of the future?
For the most part, what the future holds is irrelevant. If we have a clear vision of what the best version of us looks like, our choices must align with that vision, regardless of the circumstances we face. Rather than letting outside forces shape us, we can shape ourselves.
The future is, in fact, predictable. The choices we make today will engineer it. Build the future you dream of, one choice at a time.
