The confidence that individuals have in their beliefs depends mostly on the quality of the story they can tell about what they see, even if they see little.
~Daniel Kahneman
We have the power to convince ourselves of just about anything. Our will is incredibly strong. We can go minutes without oxygen, but our body starts telling us we’re going to die after about 30 seconds of holding our breath, so we come up for air. Just by convincing himself of another story, David Blaine held his breath, in front of a national television audience, for 17 minutes.
The stories we tell ourselves repeatedly become true to us. If we tell ourselves we aren’t good enough, we won’t be. If we tell ourselves we are confident and bold, our posture will improve. If we tell ourselves we will never understand math, the test will be harder.
The universe will continue to throw circumstances at us that are not only beyond our control, they are beyond our ability to accurately observe. We do not have to lie to ourselves. We don’t have to insist that the sky is red when it’s blue. We also don’t have to create stories that do not serve us. We don’t have to make our lives more difficult than they are by creating a narrative that will hold us back.
Believe in hope. Believe in possibility. Believe in a better you.
