The snake which cannot cast its skin has to die. As well as the minds which are prevented from changing their opinions; they cease to be mind.
~Friedrich Nietzsche
We rightly hold up words like “loyal“ and “conviction“ as virtuous. We respect firm decision makers. We value steadfastness, principles and consistency. But should we value those things over reflection, logic, or listening?
We act like changing our minds is a crime. It is as if any ability to hear out a contrary opinion and even validate it, much less to be swayed by it, shows us to be fickle or weak.
Why can’t we change our minds, even our hearts? Are we not wiser than we once were? Can’t we use an evolved perception to reconsider our beliefs? Isn’t it possible for a Muslim to make a compelling argument to a Jew, a conservative to a liberal, an Islanders fan to a Rangers fan?
We get caught on life‘s conveyor belt. We make the same choices we made before because there is comfort and familiarity, even if that familiar choice doesn’t serve us.
Today is a new day. You are wiser than you were yesterday, and you are not bound to yesterday‘s choices. Turn that agency to power. Change anything or change everything. Change your hair. Change your morning routine. Change your news outlet. Change your mind. Change your life. Choose a better version of you today.
